Context Summary
What is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is an emerging discipline focused on optimizing content so it surfaces in AI-powered answer engines—ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, Bing Copilot, Claude, and similar tools—rather than (or in addition to) traditional search engine results pages (SERPs). It's the evolution of SEO in a world where users increasingly get direct answers rather than lists of links.
Why It Matters Now
Traditional organic search traffic is declining as AI Overviews and zero-click results capture attention before users reach websites
Tools like Perplexity and ChatGPT are becoming primary research interfaces for knowledge workers
Brands that aren't optimized for answer engines risk becoming invisible in AI-generated responses
This is a greenfield space—most marketing teams have no AEO strategy yet
Current State of the AEO Space (Landscape)
What's Established
Structured data / schema markup remains foundational—answer engines pull from well-structured, authoritative content
E-E-A-T signals (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) from Google's framework carry over into what LLMs treat as credible
FAQ and Q&A content formats are highly favored by answer engines
Featured snippet optimization is the closest predecessor—AEO extends this logic to AI contexts
Citations in AI tools: Perplexity and Bing Copilot actively cite sources; ChatGPT Browse and Claude increasingly do too
What's Emerging / Unsettled
No standardized AEO audit framework exists yet (unlike SEO with Moz, Ahrefs, etc.)
LLM visibility measurement is nascent—tools like Profound, Otterly.ai, and Share of Voice trackers for AI are early-stage
Debate exists on whether traditional backlink authority translates directly to LLM citation likelihood
Prompt-based discovery: brands are starting to test what queries surface their content in ChatGPT/Perplexity vs. competitors
Conversational content architecture is emerging as a distinct content strategy—writing for how people ask questions verbally/conversationally
Key Tactics Being Discussed
Create content that directly answers specific questions (not just keyword-stuffed)
Build topical authority clusters so AI models associate your brand with a subject area
Optimize for citations: get mentioned in authoritative sources that LLMs train on or cite
Use structured data (JSON-LD, FAQ schema) aggressively
Ensure content is crawlable and not gated behind paywalls
Leverage PR and digital mentions to increase brand entity recognition in AI models
Monitor brand mentions in AI outputs (what does ChatGPT say about your client?)
Tooling Landscape
Otterly.ai – tracks brand visibility in AI answer engines
Profound – enterprise-level AI search monitoring
Perplexity Pages – content publishing directly into Perplexity's ecosystem
SparkToro (already on your radar) – audience/source intelligence that informs where to build authority
SEMrush / Ahrefs – adding AI overview tracking features
Search Response Optimizer (SRO) – emerging category of tools
Key Questions
For Micro CMO clients specifically: What types of businesses does Micro CMO serve, and are they primarily concerned with local/niche visibility or broader brand authority in AI results?
Offering integration: Is AEO being considered as a standalone Micro CMO service, an add-on to existing content/SEO work, or a framing lens for the overall content strategy offering?
Client readiness: Do current or prospective Micro CMO clients have the content infrastructure (blog, FAQ pages, schema markup) that AEO tactics can be layered onto?
Competitive differentiation: Are other Micro CMO-style fractional marketing services already positioning around AEO, or is this a first-mover opportunity?
Measurement: What would success look like for an AEO engagement—brand mentions in AI outputs, traffic from AI referrals, or client education/confidence?
Related Patterns
MicroCMO AI Content Production Offering (Ideation Stage): AEO is conceptually adjacent—both involve AI's role in content discovery and production. The AI content production offering could be positioned as the creation side while AEO is the distribution/discoverability side. These could be bundled.
Social Media Content & AI Course: The curriculum work around AI tools for content maps closely to AEO education—understanding how AI surfaces content is a natural module.
SparkToro Research: SparkToro's audience intelligence (where your audience pays attention) is directly useful for AEO—identifying which publications and sources to target for citations that LLMs will pick up.
Resource Pointers
People to follow: Rand Fishkin (SparkToro, vocal on AEO/AI search shifts), Kevin Indig (Growth Memo newsletter), Lily Ray (SEO/AEO authority), Amanda Natividad (SparkToro, zero-click content)
Publications: Search Engine Journal, Search Engine Land, The Generative AI section of Marketing Brew
Tools to explore hands-on: Run test queries in Perplexity for client brand names and competitors to see what's being surfaced—free and immediately illuminating
Communities: r/SEO on Reddit has active AEO threads; LinkedIn has a growing practitioner conversation
Reports: BrightEdge and Semrush both released 2024 AI search impact reports worth reviewing
Quick Wins
Run a brand audit in AI tools right now: Search a prospective Micro CMO client's brand name in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. Screenshot results. This immediately shows the gap and creates a compelling sales artifact.
Create an AEO one-pager for Etinosa: Summarize the landscape in a single page framed around 'what this means for Micro CMO clients'—useful for internal alignment and potential client conversations.
Map AEO to the existing Micro CMO content offering: Identify which current Micro CMO deliverables (blog posts, FAQs, social content) already partially address AEO—this shows it's an evolution, not a reinvention.
Set up a free Perplexity account and test 5-10 queries relevant to a target client niche to see what sources get cited—this builds intuition for the space quickly.
