The common way of generating progress through an idealized outcome (goals, vision, mission) is wrong. Instead, it's much better to generate progress from the existence of problems or a problem and solving that problem. This will generate much more value in the long run than outcomes via the mechanisms of pain and the motivation of alleviating pain and tangible meaningful progress (solving a problem feels more motivating than achieving an outcome that is ambiguous in it's importance)
